Want in on the coming green job boom? With energy costs heading ever higher and a President who finally gets it, we are soon going to see a rather large increase in the availability of these “green jobs”. Whether you have direct experience with some of these sectors or you can adapt your current skills to fit into any needs that may arise, these area will definitely be the ones to shoot for in the next 10 years. There are going to be a lot of changes coming down the pike in the energy/renewables/recycling industries, so be on the lookout. When searching for that new green job, use some of these titles and/or keywords to try to find some matches that would be of some interest to you.

Do One Thing: Make Your Own Natural Antibacterial Spray.

This weeks’ Do One Thing is about making a natural antibacterial spray. In the last however many years, the idea that we have to spray antibacterial cleaners all over our house and children has come to be fact, when it’s not at all. We actually need germs to survive, and if we “teach” them to evolve to get away from our antibacterial sprays, we will be in big trouble. BUT if you feel like you need it for that once in a while thing (family full of the flu, for example), here is how to make a healthier version.

Combine these ingredients in a spray bottle:
1 teaspoon of essential oil of mint or rosemary
1 cup of white vinegar

That’s it! You can now spray this on hard, non-porous surfaces to try to fight some germs. But please, do not overuse it – we need most germs that are present everywhere!

Now, I cannot promise they will stop, but it’s certainly worth a shot, no? I wrote about my frustration with the multiple phone books that kept showing up at my door and my inability to make them stop before, but I was just told about Yellow Pages Goes Green, which is trying to get the automatic delivery of the phone books to stop. Instead, they want an opt-in system, which makes so much sense to me. It would save the company money and save paper from being wasted at the same time. It’s kind of a no-brainer! Yellow Pages Goes Green.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle – Turning An Old Window Into A New Mirror Part 2.

About a month ago, I wrote about how I was turning an old window into a new mirror for our house – and it’s finally done! After much chipping, sanding, and painting, and having a piece of mirror cut for it, I can honestly say that I am pretty happy with the outcome. Not sure where in the house it’s going to be hung, so for now I keep trying it in different places. This is what it looked like as I was scraping all the junk off of it:

The bottom pane is still glass, as I am planning on using it as a picture frame once I decide where it is going to be hung up. I am pretty psyched that I was able to take something that someone else had discarded and turn it into a nice piece. Never look past something thrown away without thinking if you can use it! And by using that color blue in our house, we have officially joined the ranks of the New Mexicans!
